You’ve just been told by your contractor or your carpenter, depending on the scale of your project that the stairs that you so badly wanted are not a possibility, It may be a design issue, a problem with getting the framework to clear the building code or a good old manufacturing hiccup that has run over your dreams of an elaborate stair that would have been erected on time, under budget and looking a million bucks…

If that article seems like I’m rubbing salt on your wounds, it really isn’t so. I am just trying to help you find a comprehensive solutions to all of the problems listed above – and yes, it really is a miracle all-in-one. You know it (you’ve searched for it), and the clear winner is a spanking new flight of prefabricated stairs. There are many advantages to prefabricated stairs, two of the biggest being versatility and the speed with which you can have on your construction site.

If you’re looking to buy a prefabricated staircase, then there is little convincing that is required, except maybe to get you to stop looking for cheap prefabricated stairs and get you looking for something that is up to spec with your style and with the level of quality that prefabricated stairs can deliver at bargain basement prices. The best tip that I can give about buying prefabricated staircases, besides the usual review the seller and other such mumbo-jumbo (do you really have time to do that for the 80 plus fabrication and machining shops out there?) is to ask your contractor (if he hasn’t been any good recommending one yet, why bother?) or someone at a large construction site or better yet your architect.

Want To Know More?

While basement finishing is our specialty and expertise, we’re often asked if we can help out with other small projects around the house. Here’s one of those little projects that we’re asked to help out with in practically 9 out of 10 houses.

Seriously, If I had a nickel for every time someone asked why their old carpet had wrinkles or bubbles, I could pay for a vacation home in Tahiti! Starting out in the flooring business I have a unique perspective on this one. And while this may not be at the top of your list of concerns for your basement finishing project, it should at least be on the list.

When residential carpet is installed, it is stretched over the top of tack strip which is nailed to the floor around the room. The tack strip has hundreds of tiny nails angled towards the wall, so when carpet is stretched over it, the carpet can’t spring back to the position it was in before.

Wrinkles and bubbles occur when carpet isn’t stretched enough during installation. Compounding the problem, carpet naturally becomes looser (“relaxes”) with heat, humidity, and age. Because of carpets natural tendency to loosen and the fact that the vast majority of carpet is installed incorrectly, wrinkles and bubbles are present in the vast majority of homes within a couple years of installation.

When it comes to basement finishing, the wrinkle problem can become an absolute nightmare! Most basements are naturally more humid than the rest of your house, so if you are considering carpet for your basement finishing project, make sure you have a wrinkle-blocking plan.

Ask your basement finishing contractor how your carpet will be installed. If he tells you it’s installed like carpet is always installed, be nervous. If he tells you it’s installed with a carpet kicker by the best carpet guy he knows, run!

In your basement finishing project even the biggest, best carpet installer will fail miserably if he installs with just a kicker. A carpet kicker is a required tool for carpet, but more importantly your carpet needs to be power-stretched with a tool called a power-stretcher or you’re asking for problems.

This power-stretcher tool runs the length of the room, bracing against one wall and stretching the carpet into the opposite wall. Unlike a kicker, a power-stretcher is able to stretch the entire room enough that bubbles and wrinkles are unlikely to appear in the future. Many basement finishing projects end up with a long game room/family room. Without a power-stretcher, you are virtually guaranteed to have a wrinkle problem in the future.

When I was in the flooring business, we received regular requests to re-stretch carpet for new customers who were past the one year warranty offered by the company that installed their carpet. Contrast that with our new installs, which despite offering a lifetime installation warranty, have never had a single re-stretch warranty call.

Construction costs are unavoidable in your basement finishing project. What is avoidable is the cost to have your carpet re-stretched in a couple of years. Make sure your basement finishing wrinkle-blocking plan includes a power-stretcher and someone who knows how to use it!

Building more…

Joel Nelson is a remodeling expert serving the local market of Parker, CO, and specializing in basement finishing and kitchen remodeling.

When it comes to decorating your home it takes time to think about how you want it to look when finished. Another important factor to think about apart from how you want your interior to look is how much it is going to cost to redecorate.

Probably one of the most important rooms in the home is the kitchen. If it is decorated correctly it will easily add value to your home. On the other hand, if it is decorated incorrectly it could even devalue your home, or at least take longer to sell your home when the time comes.

So it is important to think about the appliances you are going to buy for your kitchen and to carefully plan what you want and whether it will match with the existing decor. You also need to think about the fitting of the appliances in the kitchen, whether you need a professional to fit them or if you are capable of fitting them yourself.

Most people buy their new appliance from a store that provide a fitting service. This is a much better option as they will be able to provide a professional fitting service. This gives you peace of mind that the appliances will be fitting into your kitchen with little fuss. The last thing you need is to buy an expensive appliance and try to fit it yourself. You could damage the new appliance and the kitchen cabinets in the process. This could become a costly exercise that you will want to avoid.

So how do you get this added service from the Internet? Well, most online stores will probably not offer this fitting service for you and you will probably have to find a local company to do the fitting for you. If you shop online from a site that has a brick and mortar shop, then as long as they are local they will probably be able to provide a fitting service for you.

I write articles and reviews for a number of subjects including home and family. Find my most recent product review on using a garage door keypad and keyless entry keypad for your home.

Whenever we start to run out of room in our home we have to consider several options. We can move property but this could involve months of trying to sell your own property as well as having to sell your own and will also involve having to cough up the expensive fees of solicitors and removal firms. A brick built extension is a practical option, but they can sometimes look unsightly and planning permission may not be granted anyhow. The best and most elegant way of extending a home is through the installation of an orangery.

Orangeries in the North West are considered by many to be an upmarket version of the traditional conservatory, a more stylish and good looking counterpart. As opposed to conservatories in the North West and conservatories in Lancashire which are usually predominantly composed of uPVC, an orangery is mostly made up of brick, so therefore it is more likely to slot in with the look of your home more easily.

If you have set your heart on getting an orangery installed, make sure you thoroughly research the market as it is an expensive investment and you need to be certain that it will not look out of place. Pick up brochures and see what local dealers can offer you, obtain quotes from a variety of them and check up on each of their track records on the internet or by asking around the local community.

When you have the orangery installed have a good think about how you are going to use your new space and consider the type of furniture which you would like to hold within it. You are likely to be using it on a regular basis so make sure you feel comfortable within it and make it look as good as it possible can be.

For more information on Orangeries North West, Conservatories North West or Conservatories Lancashire visit Planet South Lakes or call into your local show room.

As you are exploring the possibility of renovating your home, you will undoubtedly be faced with many decisions. While you are looking at the various colors of carpets and paint, also consider the environmental factors of your decisions. You have a grand opportunity while improving your house to also help protect the environment. There are several ways to make your home friendlier to the environment and they are listed below.

First, have the renovation crew check your insulation. If you are inadequately insulated, your home will lose heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. This causes your heater and A/C to run much more than they should. You can add more insulation during your renovation and that will help to make your home more energy efficient.

Secondly, you can take the time to optimize your water heater by putting an insulated jacket around the heating tank. This will insulate the pipes and help to keep the temperature of the water where it should be. Something like this will only cost about $20 or less and makes a great environmentally friendly addition to your renovation process.

Many people purchase new appliances during their renovations. It’s a great idea as you strive to do home improvement upgrades to invest in Energy Star appliances. These appliances that are rated Energy Star will end up saving you quite a bit of money in the long run thanks to their efficiency. Indeed, if you take the time during your home improvement renovation process to put in the correct amount of insulation, insulate your water heater and invest in energy efficient appliances, you will undoubtedly be able to help the environment while also updating your home.

Builders Blinds & Designs, LLC.

When one decides to begin renovating your home or one of your rental properties, it is essential that you are able to choose the correct home improvement contractor for the job. Taking the time to actually select a qualified and reliable home improvement contractor could very well save you a load of time and frustration in the long run, let alone money.

You should be aware that this industry is very competitive and this leads to there being numerous substandard contractors out there who are simply in it for the money, however there definitely are very scrupulous and have a good work ethic. Here are a few pointers as to what you should look at to be sure that you are able to find a reliable home improvement contractor:

· Be sure of your goal and know what you want – Before you even consider entering into home improvements, be sure to know exactly what it is that you want to achieve by doing the improvements. Have detailed sketches or plans available to show to the contractor you are considering so that he has a definite picture of what it is which you would like done.

· Know what questions to ask – Having predetermined questions which you will ask the contractor regarding the job at hand as this will give you an indication as to their work ethic. Questions pertaining to cost implications, time period and suggestions as to how to reduce costs will greatly help you in choosing the correct contractor.

· Do not rush your selection – Many people make the mistake of simply choosing the first or cheapest contractor, avoid this mistake. Take your time to establish the reputation and reliability of the contractor which you choose, be sure that you both have a clear understanding of what it is you wish to achieve and have all the necessary agreements in place.

Many people overlook the importance of finding the correct home improvement contractor for the job you wish to get done, by simply shirking the responsibility of being completely thorough in your decision, you will be lining yourself up for a couple of nasty surprises.

About The Author:

Dr Hannes Dreyer is a Wealth Creator Mentor and inventor of the Property Pro Investment System.

For a lot of people, the basement is a plain storage room that has no other function. We don’t realize how much we can do with it. To remodel a basement is not as difficult as how others would put it. Like many other things, planning is the key to a successful project. If you do not have any detailed plan, it’s like sailing with no direction. A basement will make a good game room because of the fact that the basement is perceived as a separate part of the house. And you know very well that we all get excited and we tend to scream when the game is heating up. Make sure you install acoustic ceilings to help prevent sound from bouncing. Ask your contractor how you can make the basement sound-proof.

To remodel a basement into a game room you need a couple of things depending on the activities that you and your family enjoy. A pool table is a very common addition to the game room and so is a ping pong table. You can also set up a poker table so you can have your friends come over every Friday for your poker nights. If you can include a bar in your budget then go ahead and do so. If you want to save money on setting up a bar, you can just buy a pre-owned kitchen island unit with storage and retint or repaint it to give it a fresh new look. For your chairs, you can look at your home improvement stores. Prices start at $30 but some can be very expensive and they can cost up to $300 each. With this, you have to be a wise buyer. Looking around will not hurt.

Aside from pool table, ping pong table and poker table, you can also add gaming consoles in your game room and set up your entertainment center. Don’t forget your surround sound system with your LCD TV. Be creative with your overall theme to make the room more inviting and of course fun. If you would like to use wallpapers, that’s fine as long as you match it with the basement’s theme. When you remodel your basement into a game room, a nice idea would be to put posters, tin signs and neon signs to your walls to complete the look. Dart board games, family board games and pinball games are also great additions.

Are you planning on remodeling your bathroom? Are you wondering about the cost, tips and design features of the bathroom and how to go about it? There is no need to worry. You can find every type of bathroom remodeling idea on the internet for free. All you have to do is research, research and research. You can then jot down the bathroom remodeling idea that appeals to you and start to source furniture and accessories to match it.

Before you actually start remodeling take the time to draw up a price plan for the goods you are going to buy. Stick to the budget on this and don’t increase or decrease it. Do not get swayed by discounts on bulk purchases. You have only one bathroom to remodel or maybe two; what will you do with ten lighting fixtures even if you get a bulk discount! Shortlist several work contractors that will work you on your bathroom remodeling and then ask for quotes. Remember to ask around with several work contractors before you actually start with one and the project.

Collect as many ideas and pictures of your dream bathroom as possible from the internet, and then ask your contractor to plan the project to a set time schedule. If you want a shower cubicle then you will have to order the panels and the glass well before hand or ask the contractor to source them for you. If you are not sure about dimensions then do not order shower cubicles online just get them from the local bathroom supplies stores. It’s a good idea to order required essential goods like nail guns, tile glue, nails and goods from an online dealer to save on local sourcing costs.

The best bathroom remodeling idea is where you can use the bathroom comfortably but costs you the least amount of money. Remember that the contractor will have to shift plumbing, attach new drains and even add new tiling to the bathroom so ensure that you have a back up bathroom for the family while the work is on.

One really great bathroom remodeling idea that I liked was this idea of a high tech bathroom where the fixtures were all stainless steel. The creator had managed to make steel look warm and inviting by using colored coated steel in different locations. The bath was a warm coated red and the toilet was the same but in a highly polished red. Almost made the entire bathroom look like a high tech office! I really liked it because steel just seemed so hygienic and easy to clean and posh too.

There is a lot of people that think that home renovation is something that happens within the house however there is a vast number of different type of exterior home renovations that can be done. Research has shown that people who own a house that looks nice from the outside are more likely to spend time within the garden. It is very important to approach exterior renovations with the correct attitude and planning.

An example of a major exterior renovation would be replacing roofing or siding. If this replacement is not urgent then it is a very good idea to take time to search for the best deal. Some exterior renovation jobs are so big that you’ll probably need skip hire and the help of professionals. Such a job might be replacing roofing.

Another superb way to renovate the outside of a home is to renovate the lawn, as this will actually make quite a big difference. A beautiful garden can actually do wonders for a house. It is possible that with some renovation jobs that results will be seen instantly whereas other times the work may take several months for any results to be noticeable.

The first thing that will need to be done in most renovation project is for all the debris and rubbish to be cleared and this is where skip hire comes in very useful. Most companies will allow you to hire almost any size however it is worth checking with the company what can actually be put in the skip.

If you are the type of person that likes to entertain it may be worth considering adding a patio to your garden area. A nice well-designed patio will create a nice entertainment area outdoors. If you decide to add a patio area the first that will have to be done is that grass will have to be removed and this can easily be achieved by using a sod cutter which can be hired from a store that specialising in home improvements.

Once the grass has been removed the next step is to level out the area and define the area where the patio will be located. It is best to construct the perimeters of the patio using treated wood or plastic. Once you have the area marked out you need to spread about two inches of sand, which is coarse inside the boundary and then lay the pavers snugly against the other ones. After all the pavers have been put in place the sand needs to spread across the top of the patio and then work the sand into spaces using a broom so that it goes between the different pavers. Then you’re done.

“Green” remodeling is a growing trend with environmentally conscious homeowners and renovators. You should know, however, that without formal building codes and definitions, many different practices are called “green” and not everyone agrees.

Going “green” can bring health benefits and reduced costs, but it’s not likely to bring higher prices to homes on the market. Environmentally friendly designs are most useful for people who plan on living in the home or have a market for people to whom it is a perk.

The costs of utilities can be affected tremendously by proper design. High efficiency appliances, especially furnaces and air conditioning units, waste less energy and reduce your electric bill each month. Toilets and dishwashers that use less water also help.

Passive systems can be installed to reduce the need for electricity. Solar panels can heat water, your home, and provide electricity. At least one firm also uses solar panels and fiber optic cable to bring natural sunlight into your home.

Housing materials that are recycled make homeowners feel better, reduce the impact on the environment, and may be of better quality. Beams are being created from compressed recycled wood that are stronger than regular boards. Metal roofs help cool homes and do not require tarred shingles, which can release chemicals into rainwater falling off them.

Gardeners and landscapers have a role as well. By selecting plants that require low amounts of water you can avoid having to water your plants through the summer. Rain water collected into a system can provide all your plants or garden needs through the summer.

Renovating your home to be more environmentally friendly does not necessarily bring increased costs. According to one source a large kitchen remodel of $100,000 only included $350 of additional costs because of green materials.

Materials are not hard to find. There are listings of “Green” contractors on the Internet as well as materials.

Home Depot recently began a project to educate the public about products that are recycled or otherwise environmentally friendly. The products, which have been certified by a third party, have been available for some time but homeowners are only now learning about them and showing interest. Products are also being featured in conventions and trade shows such as “Remodel Green Midwest.”

Health risks can be reduced or eliminated with these products. Many major manufacturers are making paints with lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can reduce indoor air quality and be harmful. Choosing a floor created from renewable sources often means better air quality as well. Renewable wood floors look beautiful and can add value to the home as well. Insulation can be installed that is created from soy or other natural products that increase the efficiency of your heating and don’t bring in the irritants.

With energy costs rising consistently improving your home to require less energy and generate less waste is a good financial move as well as a way to save resources for future generations.
